I was told simply to write a sequel set in the Star Wars universe, with the exception that I could not use the character of Han Solo, since Harrison Ford had not yet signed on for any future sequels in any form. I would not have been hired to write the book if the producers didn’t trust me. Did you have total freedom or were there certain guidelines. There are several things in the novel that aren’t in the movie, mostly things to flesh out the backstory. I went off and wrote the adaptation (and Splinter of the Mind’s Eye) on my own. George was far too busy working the film. What do you recall of those meetings?Īctually, no. You had meetings with George Lucas where you discussed the story I guess. My wife kept trying to get me to talk to the scruffy-looking guy seated behind us. My wife and I saw the final cut at a cast and crew private screening a week or so before the film appeared in theaters. I also doubted George could ever get all of it up on screen the way it was written in the script…but he did. I immediately thought the film had potential.

The book also highlights the fact that Hux and Kylo Ren don’t like each other which I find so fascinating because it makes me wonder how their motives and personalities are different enough to hate each other despite being on the same side. I also liked learning the “science” behind starkiller base. We find out how he got back to the base after the tie fighter crash. The book also raises questions that the movie kind of skips over like “how did Han capture the rathtars?” Another question the book made me ask was “what is the relationship between the republic and the resistance?” There are more details to Poe’s story. There are behind the scenes photos and screenshots. I’ve never seen that in an adult novelization. I like the pictures in the middle of the book. Some scenes are better in the movie like the scene between Finn and Poe when they first meet.
One added scene answered my question of what Rey’s motivation was for not selling BB-8. There are more insights into the politics. This is a great novelization of The Force Awakens!
